It takes integrity, character and leadership. It takes someone who’s not afraid to think big, to be bold and to try new and innovative approaches; it takes a strong team with a strong experienced leader.

That’s why I ask you to join me in supporting my friend Henry McMaster for Governor.

Henry and I served together under President Ronald Reagan and his leadership as your Attorney General has been extraordinary. His conservative credentials are impeccable.

Whether it’s leading the fight against President Obama’s takeover of healthcare, prosecuting Internet predators, recovering millions of taxpayer dollars, cracking down on domestic violence and standing up for the Constitution, Henry has shown that he is a conservative leader who can get things done.

I feel so strongly that my friend Henry will make an outstanding Governor – I ask you to consider two requests:

   1. Cast your vote for Henry in the Republican Primary on Tuesday.

2. Forward this message to 10 friends and urge them to support Henry too!

Henry’s conservative leadership, experience and positive vision for South Carolina offers the Republican Party the best chance for victory in November.

Thank you for considering this important request.

   Sincerely,

Gubernatorial candidate Henry McMaster told a roomful of diners at The Beacon Drive-In on Saturday that the state “seems to have lost (its) way in the economic world,” but he would use his experience as attorney general to rectify that if elected governor.

McMaster made three official stops in the Upstate Saturday, starting in Greenville, then arriving in Spartanburg at lunch time and going to Gaffney that night. McMaster is one of four Republicans making the final push for the party’s nomination in Tuesday’s primary election.

Former Governor David Beasley (1995-99) endorsed McMaster Friday and said at the Beacon on Saturday that McMaster is the “type of candidate with the leadership to truly move South Carolina forward.” Beasley said McMaster’s commitment to South Carolina and plan for it will lead to better headlines for businesses and citizens.

Beasley told the Herald-Journal he had looked forward to this year’s campaign since last June, when Gov. Mark Sanford ditched his security detail and left the state for a liaison with his Argentine mistress. Beasley said he had not planned to make an endorsement but decided to do so as the Republican primary campaign developed a rancorous tone the past few weeks. …

McMaster said he’s proud to have veered away from “distractions” that damage the state’s “enormous possibilities.” He said the prospects for South Carolina are strong if voters “elect the right leaders with a strategic vision.”

Excerpt from The Sun News Sunday editorial, “The Surest Bet:”

“After eight years of Sanford, what South Carolina needs now more than reform is progress. Of the Republicans, Attorney General Henry McMaster seems best poised to bring it.

“After years of public service, McMaster is a well-known entity, a trusted brand. He argues convincingly that he has the strongest record of working with the state legislature, such in his crusade against domestic violence. As attorney general, he has explored and fought for otherwise off-the-radar issues clearly in South Carolina’s interests – protecting our water supply in the so-called “water war” and our investment in nuclear-waste disposal in his battle against the Obama administration to keep the Yucca Mountain repository on track.

“Moving forward, McMaster describes a desire to increase the opportunities for early-childhood education. In the long-term jobs outlook, improving the education of our workers is the most critical and difficult task, we are encouraged that McMaster wants to start that effort earlier.

“Everyone who knows McMaster well describes his genuine love for South Carolina, and we sincerely hope his departure from this positive outlook throughout the campaign has been simply an election-year fad. Case in point: McMaster’s recent ad depicting our leaders in Washington as looming vultures is unlikely to be helpful when McMaster asks President Obama and Rep. Jim Clyburn to include Interstate 73 in the next highway bill…”

I made the decision a while back to stay out of the governor’s race. I know all of the Republican candidates and they have good qualities. But I started reassessing my position as the tone of the race changed, and I made the decision early this morning to have my say.

In a real sense this race is not about the candidates – or it shouldn’t be. It’s about the hopes and dreams of a state with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. It’s about good, honest, hard working people who don’t demand much from government.

They only want opportunity to improve the quality of life for their families.

I’ve watched the race unfold and I’ve watched Henry McMaster, despite all the distractions, stay focused on the positive things about South Carolina and its people. He hasn’t run anybody down, but he’s built the state up.

He offers inspiration for a better future. He offers a vision of what we can become if only we work together.

I’ve known Henry for decades. He’s pretty much the same guy in private as he is in public. He’s a Christian man with deeply held conservative values. He knows some things are always right, and some things are always wrong.

He has used the office of Attorney General to defend those values that are good and noble. I know he will do the same as governor.

I ask you to join me in supporting Henry McMaster because he has the maturity, judgment and skills to lead our state in one of the most critical times in many decades.

Sincerely,

David Beasley

Former South Carolina Governor

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Former Governor David Beasley today endorsed Henry McMaster for Governor during an afternoon press conference at McMaster campaign headquarters.

Governor Beasley said, “I made the decision a while back to stay out of the governor’s race. I know all of the Republican candidates and they have good qualities. But I started reassessing my position as the tone of the race changed, and I made the decision early this morning to have my say…I’ve watched the race unfold and I’ve watched Henry McMaster, despite all the distractions, stay focused on the positive things about South Carolina and its people. I know he will do the same as governor.”

McMaster thanked Beasley for the endorsement and said, “Governor Beasley was the last successful governor this state has seen. He and Governor Carroll Campbell set the standard for what our state’s chief executive can achieve through cooperative leadership focused on growing our economy and creating jobs. It’s truly an honor to have his support, and I look forward to building on the Beasley-Campbell legacy as governor.”
