Excerpt from The Sun News Sunday editorial, “The Surest Bet:”
“After eight years of Sanford, what South Carolina needs now more than reform is progress. Of the Republicans, Attorney General Henry McMaster seems best poised to bring it.
“After years of public service, McMaster is a well-known entity, a trusted brand. He argues convincingly that he has the strongest record of working with the state legislature, such in his crusade against domestic violence. As attorney general, he has explored and fought for otherwise off-the-radar issues clearly in South Carolina’s interests – protecting our water supply in the so-called “water war” and our investment in nuclear-waste disposal in his battle against the Obama administration to keep the Yucca Mountain repository on track.
“Moving forward, McMaster describes a desire to increase the opportunities for early-childhood education. In the long-term jobs outlook, improving the education of our workers is the most critical and difficult task, we are encouraged that McMaster wants to start that effort earlier.
“Everyone who knows McMaster well describes his genuine love for South Carolina, and we sincerely hope his departure from this positive outlook throughout the campaign has been simply an election-year fad. Case in point: McMaster’s recent ad depicting our leaders in Washington as looming vultures is unlikely to be helpful when McMaster asks President Obama and Rep. Jim Clyburn to include Interstate 73 in the next highway bill…”
