AIKEN — The key to improving education, tourism and agriculture is to cut taxes to recruit industries from around the world, Republican gubernatorial candidate Henry McMaster said Thursday during a meet-and-greet.
About a dozen residents attended the attorney general’s campaign stop in downtown Aiken, which was part of his “Path to Prosperity” RV tour.
“We have assets they don’t have anywhere else,” McMaster said.
Former Georgia resident Melanie Wofford said she was still deciding between him and Rep. Nikki Haley, R-Lexington, but she appreciated that McMaster could “articulate a vision for the state.”
“He understands so much about what South Carolina is and what it can be,” she said.
Voters were also interested in McMaster’s approach to immigration legislation and how he’d tailor it to match Arizona’s controversial law.
“I’m in favor of the same kind of law here, and I think that’s a good step,” he said.
McMaster said as the only candidate who has worked with the State Law Enforcement Division, he’d have a better understanding of establishing state’s rights in immigration regulation.
